Will any moisteriser do?

Thursday, May 12, 2011
Myth

Any moisturiser will do so long as I use something and it stops my skin feeling dry.

Truth

Moisturisers that are too heavy to be absorbed into the skin and just sit on the surface making you not feel dry can cause many skin problems such as blackheads, pimples, congestion and milia( little white hard lumps you see around your cheek bones and on your eyelids.). A  good moisturiser must be light so the skin is able to absorb the essential vitamins it must have including Vitamin A and Vitamin C.

Oily Skin - to scrub or not to scrub!

Thursday, May 12, 2011
Myth

You have oily skin and think you can get rid of the oil by scrubbing every other day and using products that dry the skin out.

Truth

By scrubbing, you just produce more oil from the stimulation you are doing to the skin. The skin may feel smooth but it is no advantage. When you dry the surface oil, you cause a dry layer of flaky skin that is unable to absorb moisture and stops excess oil flowing out of the skin therefore you end up with more blockages as pimples, blackheads, acne and milea.

Can I cure ACNE for good?

Sunday, May 01, 2011
Myth

If we fix the face or where the acne is appearing it will be cured for good

Truth

NO. Acne is the result of a hormonal imbalance resulting in over active production of sebum (oil).  To get a permanent clear skin the body function must be balanced.  You must keep the skin fed with the essential vitamins and clean so the oils can flow without becoming infected while sorting out the hormone issue. This hormonal imbalance can be due to many factors such as

  • you may be a person who stresses in which case, you produce too much cortisol which believed to activate an imbalance of hormones. Stress is believed to be the most common cause that is why students develop acne in year 11 and 12 and it disappears after their exams are over. Taking Vitamin B may be a great help to calm stress.
  • Many get a pimple outbreak when something special is coming up such as their wedding again this is stress.
  • you may have inherited an unbalanced hormone body
  • you may be polycystic
  • when you are pregnant your skin can be perfect or develop acne due to the effect the pregnancy has on your body hormone  balance.
  • Different contraception can cause acne with some and improve it with others.

It has been noticed that Vitamin B can help calm stress and if you think you have a hormonal issue get a check up with your doctor.

Moisteriser plus Sunscreen - is that enough?

Sunday, April 10, 2011
Myth

Moisturiser including sunscreen is good enough.

Truth

It is very hard to get enough protection and absorption from a combined product. Just think you need to feed your skin so those ingredients must penetrate yet the others  will have to stay on the surface to protect the surface from the UVA and UVB rays of the sun penetrating. You are much safer to always place your separate sunscreen on last and reapply every 4 hours if you are out in the sun for hours on end.

Why do celebrities promote skin products?

Thursday, April 07, 2011
Myth

The products promoted on TV fixed acne for all those stars.

Truth

More than likely those stars have never used those products. The products are very high in ingredients that just dry the skin out/ if you have used them you would have witnessed your towels with bleached white patches/ how could this then be deemed to be friendly for your skin. They may actually cause pigmentation due to the damage done the protective layer of your skin. ALWAYS wear sunscreen.

Does smoking harm the skin?

Wednesday, March 30, 2011
Myth

Smoking does not harm skin

Truth

One cigarette is believed to destroy 25milligrams of vitamin C and a healthy balanced body needs 45 milligrams of vitamin C to exist each day. This is why smokers have dull grey skin and can have pigmentation. It may be beneficial to take 1000 milligrams of Vitamin C every day to replace some of the loss caused by the smoking.
Vitamin C is essential to protect the skin from the formation of pigmentation. It is a free radical scavenger. Skin low in Vitamin C is usually very sensitive and can be very flushed on the cheeks and chin.
